Donington Park National Circuit will be the venue for the fifth race meeting of the MRF Legends Cars National Championship season next weekend, 22nd/23rd July, where the popular all-action category will form part of the huge ‘Convoy in the Park’ event at the renowned East Midlands track.

Marking the start of the second half of the 2017 campaign for the 5/8 scale pocket rockets, the eagerly anticipated race meeting will see the MRF Legends Cars reunite with the behemoths of the BTRA Truck Racing Championship for an incredible weekend of action both on and off track.

Thousands of spectators are expected at Donington across the two days where the stars of the MRF Legends Cars will thrill with their usual dose of wheel-to-wheel, bump-drafting racing which has thus far delivered some sensational motorsport this year.

After a strong weekend last time out at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire, John Mickel (Horsham) is the new championship leader heading to Leicestershire. Taking four wins from the six races contested, the reigning champion moved back to the top of the standings and now has nine victories in total.

Erstwhile points leader Ben Power (Guilsfield, Powys) is still well within touch, only 155 points adrift of Mickel, and up until the Croft weekend the Welshman had been the driver to beat. Aiming to hit back from some technical issues last time out, he heads to Donington with eight wins under his belt.

Jack Parker (Wolverhampton) is next in the driver standings and while one of the most consistently competitive drivers in the championship, he has experienced quite a bit of misfortune too which has pegged back his points-scoring ability. Despite that, he has three wins and is third in the title race.

Fourth placed Steve Whitelegg (Bury) will be determined to return to the coveted series top three at Donington, especially after the previous round ended unceremoniously with a hefty excursion into the barriers at the start of the final race. Currently fourth in the championship, he has three wins.

Next-up is Paul Simmons (Lingfield), fifth in the main standings and leading the Masters class after a very strong season up to now. He is followed in the outright title battle by Rookie class pace setter Miles Rudman who, from just down the M42 in Sutton Coldfield, will provide plenty of local interest.

The overall top 10 is completed by seventh placed Nathan Anthony (Horley), still on cloud nine after finishing on the overall points-scoring podium for the first time in his MRF Legends Cars career at Croft, Gary Whitelegg (Handforth), Mike Schlup (Cuckfield) and Tom Grainger (Sidcup).

Don’t forget, the points-scoring allocations for MRF Legends Cars are based on 200 points for a win, 185 points for second place, 170 points for third and so on, decreasing by 10 points scored per subsequent position. With that in mind the championship landscape can change, quite literally, in the blink of an eye with six fantastic races in store at Donington.

“It’s hard to believe we’re already into the second half of the season next weekend, but what a fantastic way to start as part of Convoy in the Park”, said MRF Legends Cars National Championship owner Phil Cooper, “The truck meeting at Donington is always a huge event and we’re delighted to be part of it, especially with so many spectators expected across the weekend.

“We really have enjoyed a classic season of MRF Legends Cars racing so far with some outstanding battles, incredibly close on-track action and competition of the highest standard. It’s always great being back at Donington and I know we’re in store for some incredible, edge of the seat action. Hold onto your hats everyone…”
